PittPharmacy_AnnaBodnar_0093Anna Bondar, Class of 2015, presented her poster titled, Disparities in Access to Diabetes Care in Older Hispanic Subgroups, April 8th at the 2013 Health Diversity Poster Competition.  Anna was a T32 summer aging research scholar last summer, and this poster is the culmination of her work.

A bit about her important findings…

Prior disparities research tended to lump all Hispanic groups together because subgroup sample sizes were too small. However, using large nationally representative data allowing us to look at Hispanic subgroups (Puerto Rico, Mexico, Cuba, etc), Anna discovered that older diabetics from Cuba were MUCH less likely to received recommended annual diabetes monitoring tests. As “one-size-fits-all” interventions are inefficient and expensive, Anna’s findings will be useful for developing more targeted policies and interventions designed to reduce disparities in diabetes care.

Anna’s faculty advisor is associate professor Joshua Thorpe
