PittPharmacy_HillmanCenter_0474BA total of 50 care packages for patients at the Hillman Cancer Center were assembled and distributed by P1 and P2 student members of  Pitt’s chapter of Student Society of Health-System Pharmacy.  The care packages were intended to help patients cope with chemotherapy treatments. While working on this project, students were able to learn about the intensity of chemotherapy treatment including side effects and required lifestyle modifications.

The most gratifying part of the project was being able to take the care packages directly to the patients at Hillman Cancer Center. All the patients were excited and appreciative of our thoughts and gifts. They were touched at the effort and consideration we put into each care package.

This project showed us how we can  extend our education from what we learn in the classroom to helping patients in the community and is one we hope to continue.

Students coordinating and organizing the project were Jocelyn Hatfield, the SSHP Public Service Chair, with help from members Valerie Nolt, Dan Nelson, Rebecca Tokarski, Stephanie Cotugno, Amanda Jaber and Allison Blumer as well as Joni Carrol, SSHP President-Elect and Anna Bondar, SSHP President

Faculty member Rima Mohammad is advisor for the organization.
