PittPharmacy_OlufunmilolaOdukoya_067Assistant Professor Olufunmilola K. Odukoya, BPharm, PhD had been selected as a recipient of the 2015 AcademyHealth New Investigator award for her research entitled  OTC Sleep Aids: Older Adult Medication – Taking Behavior and Safety Risks.  The AcademyHealth New Investigator Small Grant Program is designed to support the early careers of new health services researchers. This grant program funds innovative, timely, and relevant research and translation activities that advance AcademyHealth’s vision of improving health and health care by generating evidence and moving evidence into policy and practice.

Odukoya’s study aims to determine the prevalence of unintentional misuse of OTC sleep medication by older adults and their decision-making process in selecting and using these medications. Research in this area is critical for developing effective interventions to ensure safe and appropriate use of these medications by older adults.  Study findings will enable development of patient-centered interventions that will be implemented in community pharmacies and senior centers.

Odukoya is an assistant professor in the pharmacy and therapeutics department at the School of Pharmacy.
