Current PittPharmacy PhD student Matthew Gray PharmD ’18 recently received the Student Research Award by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists Foundation for his paper published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. The award was presented at the American Society of Health System Pharmacist’s Midyear meeting. This annual award recognizes a research article published by a PharmD student based on its quality and significance to pharmacy. Gray’s faculty mentor for this project was Assistant Professor Inmaculada Hernandez, PharmD, PhD.

His article, entitled “Outcomes of Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Newly Recommended for Oral Anticoagulation Under the 2014 American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology/Heart Rhythm Society Guideline” was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association in January of 2018. Its results found that patients with Atrial-Fibrillation who are considered to be low risk are not seeing significant benefits to stroke reduction when following the 2014 AHA guidelines for treatment with anti-coagulation.
