Susan J. Skledar, RPh, MPH, FASHP, Alumna Shelby Corman ’02, and PittMedicine faculty member Thomas Smitherman, MD collaborated to publish a manuscript Addressing innovative off-label medication use at an academic medical center in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy. The study describes a systematic approach to evalulation of off-label medication use at UPMC. Medications are approved by the FDA for specific uses. Ongoing research allows for additional uses, called “off-label” indications. Skledar and colleagues developed a process to ensure patient safety for off-label medication uses at UPMC.
Skledar is an associate professor in the pharmacy and therapeutics department at the School of Pharmacy.
