Dr. Carolyn Thorpe, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy and Therapeutics, traveled with a group of PittPharmacy student mentees to the American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, October 29 – November 2, 2016, to present the results of four research projects.
Ingrid Pan and Kaley Hayes (Class of 2017) were recognized as one of eight poster award winners in the Population, Reproductive, and Sexual Health Section (PRSH) at the American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado. The title for their poster was “Evaluation of Targeted HPV Vaccination Education among Undergraduate College Students.” The project is part of The HPV Vaccine: Red Light to Cancer, which aims to create awareness and foster discussion to de-stigmatize HPV and the vaccine and to educate the catch-up college-aged population through interactive educational campus events. Joshua Niznik ’15 and current PhD student in the Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy Research presented a poster in the newly established pharmacy program of APHA entitled, “Health Policy and Its Role in the Evolution of Pharmacy Education and Practice: A Review.” Co-authors include Susan M. Assistant Professor Carolyn Thorpe, PhD, MPH, presented a Round Table Presentation in a session on Cognitive Impairment, Dementia, and End-of-Life Care within the Aging and Public Health program of APHA, entitled “Diabetes Treatment Decisions in Older Patients with Dementia: Provider and Caregiver Perspectives.” Study co-authors include Loren Schleiden research coordinator at PittPharmacy, Dr. Megan Hamm, Kelly Williams, Dr. Michelle Rossi, Dr. Michael Fine, and Dr. Susan Zickmund in the Pitt Department of Medicine. Funding for this study was provided by the Aging Institute of UPMC Senior Services and the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Vince Netto ’16 and current PhD student in the Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy Research presented a poster in the Medical Care program of APHA entitled, “Role of Past Adherence to Anti-Hypertensive Medications in Predicting Adherence to Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors in New Initiators.” Study co-authors include Dr. Xinhua Zhao (biostatistician), Associate Professor Joshua M. Thorpe, PhD, MPH, and Carolyn Thorpe, PhD, MPH. Funding and resources for this study were provided by the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, the Pittsburgh Claude D.
