Faculty member Neal Benedict, PharmD has recently published Promotion of Self-directed Learning Using Virtual Patient Cases in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education assessing the effectiveness of virtual patient cases to promote self-directed learning in a required advanced therapeutics course.

Benedict’s manuscript describes the development, implementation and assessment of virtual patient cases in an advanced pharmacy therapeutics course (advanced pharmaceutical care II).  The virtual patients were developed using the vpSim platform and were designed to teach fundamental knowledge and skills, and replace lecture.  Students were required to complete the virtual patient cases prior to class.  Class time previously devoted to lecture was replaced with a group discussion of the case and its objectives.

Neal Benedict is an assistant professor at the School of Pharmacy pharmacy and therapeutics department.
