PittPharmacy_ChelseaHendersenOn September 22, 2014 the Jewish Health Care Foundation welcomed 42 multidisciplinary graduate students who will deploy systems thinking to tackle issues in health care as part of the 2014 Jonas Salk Fellowship. Representing PittPharmacy is Chelsea Henderson, class of 2016.

The fellows, from Carlow University, Carnegie Mellon University, Chatham University, Duquesne University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Robert Morris University, represent a diverse range of disciplines from clinical practice and research to public health and policy to health administration and business. During the next four sessions, fellows will continue developing solutions to their selected health problem ranging from ending pervasive sexual assault on college campuses, preventing hospital-acquired infections, re-engaging people with HIV/AIDS in care, boosting low HPV vaccination rates, to helping seniors remain at home.

Fellows will develop new solutions to the health problems using four problem-solving lenses: Crisis Management, to generate a sense of urgency, craft a swift response, and know where all players should be in time and space; Disruptive Innovation, to find a different route to a solution that is simpler and cheaper; Predictive Modeling, to simulate how the interplay of factors within complex systems affect health outcomes; Social Activism, to realize a positive, hopeful vision through the force of public opinion.
